February Week 2: Geo-conquest

WEEK 2: CORE  Geo-Conquest: Sacrifice and serve!

Knowledge:  Learn more about sacrifice as you gain knowledge about Africa and the service that is happening there.  Do all of the following:

#1 Plan out your week and either write it down in your planner or plan it out with your parent/running partner.

 #2 Read Ch #5-10 of “A Long Walk to Water”

#3 Read the scripture for the month and Gettysburg address at least one time

#4 Memorize as many countries of the 54 officially recognized countries in Africa as you can!  We will have prizes for the following categories: 10, 25, 50 or more.

#7 Read: D & C 97:8: Verily I say unto you, all among them who know their hearts are ^ahonest, and are broken, and their spirits contrite, and are ^bwilling to observe their covenants by ^csacrifice—yea, every sacrifice which I, the Lord, shall command—they are ^daccepted of me.

Understand: Create understanding by doing the first inspirements below and then one or more of the following

Do this: - Share a power point, report, presentation, video (made by you or someone else), etc. on cool service projects that have happened or are happening in Africa.  You can post these on the yahoo group before class, if you’d like to. Then do one or more of the following or one of your own:s

-Identify people who reached out to serve in “A Long Walk to Water” despite the hard conditions and tell us, a parent, a sibling or a friend why you think they sacrificed, even when it was hard.

-Make a map out of anything (clay, pasta, a cake!) that shows the journey that Salva Dut went on during his life in Africa.

-Do some type of project about Africa: a food, a map, a poster with different flags, a collection of pictures of African children, a powerpoint with all your favorite African animals, religions in Africa, etc.

-Study the Barbary pirates and bring a project on them to teach us (excellent, short resource: http://www.heritage-history.com/index.php?c=read&author=finnemore&book=barbary&story=corsairs)

Intelligence: Create intelligence about sacrifice by using your understanding to reach out and serve by…dum, dum, dum!

NOTE: We will need to move to my house for Journeyman during lunch to accommodate our activity at the end of Journeyman.  Please plan on taking your youth there then or arranging a ride (I can make two trips if I need to J).
