February Week 4: Imaginative Arts

WEEK 4: CORE Imaginative Arts: Sacrifice to serve

Knowledge: Seek knowledge by doing all of the following
#1 Plan out your week and either write it down in your planner or plan it out with your parent/running partner.
#2 Read the scripture for the month and Gettysburg address at least one time; come prepared to pass it off if you memorized it!
#3“Way To Be”: Ch 7: Be Humble and write down or highlight and bring at least one favorite quote or part.
#4 Finish “A Long Walk to Water.” Bring at least one favorite quote or favorite part.
#5 Read Matthew 10:39: “He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.”
#6 Watch the following:

Understanding: Turn knowledge to understanding by doing one or more of the following
-Look around you and identify 5 ways people are serving or have served in your immediate community: women’s shelters, food banks, etc.  Bring them to class to share or post them online before class.
-Have a discussion with your family and discuss your most meaningful service you have given as a family and how it made you feel.  Would you do it again?  What would you do differently?
-Research more into what Salva Dut has been doing in Africa if you haven’t already and share your findings with us or someone else.
-Do a word study on a word that stands out to you after all your reading and experiences this month.

Intelligence:  Turn understanding into intelligence by applying it to your life by doing the following:
-Come with us on our service field trip to the Love Soup Kitchen!  We will be doing or final discussion of “A Long Walk to Water” on the way there or back in your vehicles.  Prepare to serve!  We need to be on our best behavior.  The lady who runs this service project is pretty selective about who she will let come, and expects us to be on our best behavior.  I know you will be wonderful!

February Week 3: Eureka!

WEEK 3: CORE  Eureka: Sacrifice to learn

Knowledge: Seek knowledge by doing all of the following
#1 Plan out your week and either write it down in your planner or plan it out with your parent/running partner.
#2 Read the  scripture for the month and Gettysburg address at least one time
#3 Read the excerpt: DaVinci #6: Whole-brained thinking and do the test at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0S09GImDB5Y to see if you are more right-brained or left-brained and then try the following exercise: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWi9c9neJ3U
#4 Read Ch. 11-14 in “A Long Walk to Water”: watch what he does as a leader.  Don’t be afraid of ideas, lead out and use your whole brain J!
#5 Jump into our study of chemistry this month by learning more about atoms, using your whole brain and learning how even atoms sacrifice to make a difference: watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnjxrFNie5I (Bill Nye on Atoms) or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlSOESXQI7o (Little Bouncing Blue Atom on Atoms)

Understanding: Do at least one of each of the groups below: one for brains, one for atoms:
Brains!-do one of these or one of your own on using the two sides of your brain:
-Research right brain vs. left brain: exercises to test it, what each side does, how it affects you…any questions you may have!  Bring your findings!
-Try to guess what side of the brain people in your family or friends use more of and then give them your favorite test to see if you are right.  Document your findings and share them with us, a parent, or friend.
-Looking at the list of things that you benefit from on each side of the brain (see video from above at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWi9c9neJ3U), try to pick the five qualities that you think would be the best for a good leader.  Are they all on one side? Mostly on one or the other?  You could have a debate with someone at home or bring your ideas to class to share.
Atoms!-ditto!
-Bring a model of the atom, or some type of presentation to teach us about something you learned about atoms.  You can even come up with a song like the one on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdDjnVlYKpU
--Write a paper, poem, etc. about the connection between atoms and sacrifice, like how atoms sacrifice electrons to change their state J.
-Set a timer for 10 minutes and brainstorm atoms, sacrifice and your life on a piece of paper-- see what crazy connections you come up with!  Then, of course, record it or share it J.

Intelligence:  Create Intelligence by participating in our project in class and doing one of the following:
-In the da Vinci excerpt it read: “Some of you are planners, serious and analytical others are intuitive playful and spontaneous. The very best are those who will learn to balance analysis and intuition, seriousness and play, planning and improvisation, Arte and Scienza.” Ask three people (your parents and one other or some other combination) whether or not they think you are more planners or more spontaneous and ask for examples, if they have them.  Then sit and brainstorm things you can do that will help you use the other side of your brain more.  Pick one and do it before class.  Share with us, a friend, or parent how it went.
-Teach what you have learned about this week to another group of students, adults, or siblings, then come  and  share how it went J.
-Pray about how you should apply what you learned this week and then act on it.

February Week 2: Geo-conquest

WEEK 2: CORE  Geo-Conquest: Sacrifice and serve!

Knowledge:  Learn more about sacrifice as you gain knowledge about Africa and the service that is happening there.  Do all of the following:

#1 Plan out your week and either write it down in your planner or plan it out with your parent/running partner.
#2 Read Ch #5-10 of “A Long Walk to Water”
#3 Read the scripture for the month and Gettysburg address at least one time
#4 Memorize as many countries of the 54 officially recognized countries in Africa as you can!  We will have prizes for the following categories: 10, 25, 50 or more.
#5 Watch the following about Salva Dut: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuLbHz7k9xg

#7 Read: D & C 97:8: Verily I say unto you, all among them who know their hearts are ahonest, and are broken, and their spirits contrite, and are bwilling to observe their covenants by csacrifice—yea, every sacrifice which I, the Lord, shall command—they are daccepted of me.

Understand: Create understanding by doing the first inspirements below and then one or more of the following
Do this: - Share a power point, report, presentation, video (made by you or someone else), etc. on cool service projects that have happened or are happening in Africa.  You can post these on the yahoo group before class, if you’d like to. Here is one site you could look at for ideas: https://www.lds.org/media-library/video/humanitarian?lang=eng or https://www.lds.org/media-library/video/topics/service?lang=eng
Then do one or more of the following or one of your own:s
-Identify people who reached out to serve in “A Long Walk to Water” despite the hard conditions and tell us, a parent, a sibling or a friend why you think they sacrificed, even when it was hard.
-Make a map out of anything (clay, pasta, a cake!) that shows the journey that Salva Dut went on during his life in Africa.
-Do some type of project about Africa: a food, a map, a poster with different flags, a collection of pictures of African children, a powerpoint with all your favorite African animals, religions in Africa, etc.
-Study the Barbary pirates and bring a project on them to teach us (excellent, short resource: http://www.heritage-history.com/index.php?c=read&author=finnemore&book=barbary&story=corsairs)

Intelligence: Create intelligence about sacrifice by using your understanding to reach out and serve by…dum, dum, dum!
YUMMY! Frosting delicious Valentine cookies to give away (and eat a few!) as a Valentine’s service project.  Details to come!

NOTE: We will need to move to my house for Journeyman during lunch to accommodate our activity at the end of Journeyman.  Please plan on taking your youth there then or arranging a ride (I can make two trips if I need to J). Please don’t come to the church just to take your youth from one place to another. I am sure we can work something out to accommodate your needs. Thanks!

February Week 1; Leadership Academy

WEEK 1: Focus: What is sacrifice?

CORE-Leadership

Knowledge: Do all of these
#1 Plan out your week and either write it down in your planner or plan it out with your parent/running partner.
#2 Do a Word Study: Sacrifice and bring it to share
#3 Read the opening article, scripture for the month, and Gettysburg address at least one time
#4 Read Max Lucado: Ch 3 “The Touch of God” and bring your favorite quote from it
#5 Read chapters 1-5 of “A Long Walk to Water”

Understanding:  Choose one or more of the following or create one of your own
-Do a collage or piece of art, write a poem or learn a piece of music about godly hands or the power of touch.
-Do another word study on a word you feel inspired to go into further depth with after your reading
-Prayerfully find a scripture or poem that reminds you of something you read in your preparation for class this week and either memorize it or make a display or card for you to hang somewhere where you will see it daily and think about it.
-Observe and write down at least three people you know of that reach out with gentle hands to you in your life.  Write a note thanking them.
-Write down a list of 10 things that might make people the “social outcasts” that Max Lucado mentioned. Pick three and think of one way each you could reach out and help them.
-Write down three examples of people who experience conflict in “A Long Walk to Water” and identify a way you would have tried to act in those situations as someone who was looking on.

Intelligence:   Choose one or more of the following
-Look around for people who could use your “touch,” through email, a warm smile, a hand shake, a hug, a gentle word.  Pick at least one person to share a godly touch with.  Write in your journal, tell a parent or friend, or come and share how it went.
-Teach a FHE on what you learned this week.  Come back and share how it went: favorite quotes, thoughts, comments, etc.

Come prepared to participate in a Simulation!
