April Week 1: Leadership Academy



LEADERSHIP ACDEMY

CORE CLASS: This week we will be asking ourselves a couple questions: “What is initiative?  How does it help me be a responsible citizen?” To get ready for that, please review the following, writing down or highlighting favorite parts or quotes to share!

I. SEEK KNOWLEDGE:  Do all five
1. Plan out your week with your mentor/parent like in a weekly accountability meeting.
2. Do a Word study on “initiative”: the ability to assess and initiate things independently.  This is not in the 1828 dictionary, but synonyms are: self-motivation, resourcefulness, inventiveness, imagination, ingenuity, originality, creativity, enterprise;  Pick one to use in your study of the word “intiative”!
3. Read the first two sections of “Charlie’s Monument” (through page18 in my book)
4. Read the reading from Max Lucado: “Conclusion: Fixing your Eyes on Jesus.” (5 pages)
5. Now read the scripture and quote from Teddy Roosevelt (at least once!) and think about what all these things have in common.
II. GAIN UNDERSTANDING: After you have studied that section, pick something that came up in your studies or that came to mind as you were studying it and study it deeper to gain better understanding.  Check out the blog for ideas and suggestions, but make it your own!

III. CREATE INTELLIGENCE: Do these three things
*Now, before you try to apply what you have learned, watch the following clip:
*Then repeat the following to yourself while looking in the mirror at least 5 times:

Now, think about what you have studied.  How can you make it a part of your life?  Make a plan and DO something to change yourself with what you have learned. (Check out the blog for ideas!)

April Week 1: Leadership Academy inspirement ideas


IDEAS FOR GAINING UNDERSTANDING:
-Find a story that was or wasn't mentioned about people in the scriptures that sought to come unto Christ.  Read it, research it, and use some way to present or teach it to others.

-Look in the Book of Virtues and share online or come with an example of a hero or person in history that showed initiative like the following:

-climb up a tree and really try to see things around you for a while.  Think about your dreams, your goals, people you admire and why you want to be near them.  Think of what God wants you to do and become.  Take your journal with you or record your thoughts afterward and then share them with someone.

-Think about Charlie and his experiences as the beginning of the book.  Do a T-chart comparison of his life and your life.

IDEAS FOR CREATING INTELLIGENCE:
-Find someway to remind yourself to "focus your eyes on Jesus" every day: like put up by your bed a quote, a scripture, a picture, etc. that you will see every day. Do this for at least 2 days and report to someone or record what you did!

-Say a prayer, asking what Zacchaeus did, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to have eternal life?" (Matt. 19:16) Ask about what God sees for you to do in the future, what He sees for you to do tomorrow.  Take time to really listen to and write down the answers that come.   Make a plan for one thing!  Show initiative!

-Take something you learned about and do a Family Home Evening about it!

 -Using the scriptures make a list of qualities of Jesus.  Make a list of your own.  Circle the ones that are the same (there will be many) and pick one of His that you don't have that you would like to be and plan a way to do that...to become "just like Jesus"!

--Ponder on what you have learned in the readings about initiative.  Pray about how you can show more initiative in your life in one of the projects you have always wanted to do, write down your promptings in your journal or tell a parent, and then write down a plan of action.  Do it for three days. (You will need to start this three days before you get to Vanguard...Sunday is a great day for this!)

March Week 4: Imaginative Arts



CORE CLASS: Week 4
Imaginative Arts!

Imaginative Arts week focus: Integrity in What We Do!
Know: Seek knowledge by doing all of the following:
1) Plan out your week and either write it down in your planner or plan it out with your parent/running partner.
) Read the core scripture and quote at least one time; come prepared to pass it off if you memorized it!
3) Memorize the following scripture: Job 27:5- …till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me.
4) “Way To Be”: Ch 4: Be Clean and write down or highlight and bring at least one favorite quote or part.
5) Finish “Star Girl.” Bring at least one favorite quote or favorite part.

6) Read the following Quote and explain to someone what it means: 
 “Do what thy manhood bids thee do;
   From none but self expect applause;
   He noblest lives and noblest dies
   Who makes and keeps his self-made laws.”-Sir Richard Francis Burton
8) As we have discussed so many aspects of integrity, consider the following performance, it’s uniqueness and the integrity that they show to their cultural dance style: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoHlrQScWl0

Understanding: Turn knowledge to understanding by doing THIS:
Find an artistic example (music, dance, art, poetry) that you feel demonstrates an integrity like River Dancing does, or that you feel teaches us more about what we have learned this month and share it with us online before we get to class.
And then do one of the following:
·         Do a word study on a word that comes to mind from what you learned this month
·         Write a paper about Star Girl and what you learned from it, how she showed integrity, whether you liked it or not, or comparing characters in it.  Turn it in to a mentor or parent to evaluate and return.  Share your thoughts from it in class.
·         Create an artistic example (poem, music, etc.) about what you learned this month (you can do one project to satisfy both this inspirement as well as the journeyman-level “monthly theme project”)

Intelligence:  Turn understanding into intelligence by applying it to your life by doing the following in class:
·         Discuss “Star Girl” in class with us and consider how your life can be different because of reading that book
·         Come prepared to participate in a water color art project.  Please let Sister Biesinger know if you can bring your own paints for this!
