January Week 1 & 4 poem: "When Nature Wants a Man"

"When Nature Wants a Man" by Angela Morgan

When Nature wants to drill a man
And thrill a man,
And skill a man,
When Nature wants to mould a man
To play the noblest part;
When she yearns with all her heart
To create so great and bold a man
That all the world shall praise--

Watch her method, watch her ways!
How she ruthlessly perfects
Whom she royally elects;
How she hammers him and hurts him
And with mighty blows converts him
Into trial shapes of clay which only Nature understands--

While his tortured heart is crying and he lifts beseeching hands!--
How she bends, but never breaks,
When his good she undertakes....
How she uses whom she chooses
And with every purpose fuses him,
By every art induces him
To try his splendor out--
Nature knows what she's about.

When Nature wants to take a man
And shake a man
And wake a man;
When Nature wants to make a man
To do the Future's will;
When she tries with all her skill
And she yearns with all her soul
To create him large and whole....
With what cunning she prepares him!

How she goads and never spares him,
How she whets him and she frets him
And in poverty begets him....
How she often disappoints
Whom she sacredly anoints,
With what wisdom she will hide him,
Never minding what betide him
Though his genius sob with slighting and his pride may not forget!
Bids him struggle harder yet.
Makes him lonely
So that only
God's high messages shall reach him
So that she may surely teach him
What the Hierarchy planned.

Though he may not understand
Gives him passions to command--
How remorselessly she spurs him,
With terrific ardor stirs him
When she poignantly prefers him!

When Nature wants to name a man
And fame a man
And tame a man;
When Nature wants to shame a man
To do his heavenly best....
When she tries the highest test
That her reckoning may bring--
When she wants a god or king!--
How she reins him and restrains him
So his body scarce contains him
While she fires him
And inspires him!
Keeps him yearning, ever burning for a tantalising goal--
Lures and lacerates his soul.
Sets a challenge for his spirit,
Draws it higher when he's near it--
Makes a jungle, that he clear it;
Makes a desert, that he fear it
And subdue it if he can--
So doth Nature make a man.

Then, to test his spirit's wrath
Hurls a mountain in his path--
Puts a bitter choice before him
And relentless stands o'er him.
'Climb, or perish!' so she says....
Watch her purpose, watch her ways!

Nature's plan is wondrous kind
Could we understand her mind ...
Fools are they who call her blind.
When his feet are torn and bleeding
Yet his spirit mounts unheeding,
All his higher powers speeding
Blazing newer paths and fine;
When the force that is divine
Leaps to challenge every failure and his ardor still is sweet
And love and hope are burning in the presence of defeat....

Lo, the crisis! Lo, the shout
That must call the leader out.
When the people need salvation
Doth he come to lead the nation....
Then doth Nature show her plan
When the world has found--a man

January week 4: Imaginative Arts

Monthly Theme: The Role of God in Society and our Lives

PRINCIPLE: Courage

POEM/SCRIPTURE of the MONTH: (see if you can have these memorized by the end of the month :)!)

Psalms 31:24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.

(read through the whole poem once  week, but try to memorize at least the part at the end)
FEARLESS THOU SHALT BE
In the wake of yawning decadence,
In the arms of dreadful pestilence
In the eyes of hopeless impudence,
Fearless Thou shalt be!
When the time is ripe to cast the sword
When the time is prime to spread the word,
When evil’s ugly head is reared,
Fearless Thou shalt be!
When it’s time to do the best things right,
When it’s time to hold your stance and fight
When you don’t look back to dread your plight,
Fearless Thou shalt be!
When evil’s deed is unvanquished
When all good seems to have perished
When good almighty’s left ravished
Fearless Thou shalt be!
For darkness comes before the light
Victory comes as the hero’s right
Tarry not, Stand up and fight!
Fearless Thou shalt be!

Imaginative Arts week focus: Courage to DO

KNOW: Create Knowledge by studying the following

1) Before you begin your studies, plan this week's studies and discuss it with your parents. Use something like a SAR (Student Accountability Report) and weekly parent mentor meeting (PMM)

2) Read the following:
- Joshua 10:25, 2 Timothy 2:1-6, and D&C 128: 22
-The last chapters of “The Last Battle”
-“Way To Be” Ch 9: Be Prayerful:
-Read the following and memorize your favorite two lines:
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.... You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you... We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
-Re-read the poem titled "When Nature wants a Man" and think about how it relates to courage.  I would do it while listening to the song below :)!
3) Watch the following video:

4) Watch/listen to "Game of Thrones":

UNDERSTANDING: Choose ONE of the following to increase your understanding for our book discussion:
-Do a word study on "soldier."  Come prepared to share with the class :)!
-Think of your own way to teach something you learned from The Last Battle. Remember, understanding requires action so knowledge can sink into your heart. Have a parent, or mentor, approve your inspirement.
-We are living in the Last Days and taking part in the “Last Battle” before the end of the world. Make a list of some of the enemy’s tactics in the book and see if you can find some ways how you see them around you today. Also, list some of the tactics used by those on Aslan’s side and how you might use some of them today. Teach us what you learned.
-Pick your favorite scene in the book and represent it in some way (a skit, a picture, a poem, etc). Teach us why you liked that scene and what you learned from it.
-There were several leaders in this book such as: Shift, Trinian, Tash, Aslan, Rishda Tarkaan, any of the Queens and Kings of Narnia, and others. Pick two leaders and compare how they reacted to uncertain or hard things.  How did they show courage? Share what you learned in your own way.
-Things became more “real” as the characters went “further up and further in”. Have you ever seen this pattern in your life? Write about, or present in some way, how this might apply to our lives today.
-Why could the dwarves not see what everyone else could see? Have you ever felt like this or know someone who acts like this? What can you do to help yourself or others in this situation? Does that take courage? What must happen for people to want to see? Present your thoughts.

INTELLIGENCE: Choose one of the following to apply what you have learned:
-Choose to do a courageous action from your understanding about The Last Battle to work on this week. Record what you chose and how it went.

-Teach your family what you learned from The Last Battle in a family lesson. Give them a challenge and take the challenge yourself. Record how it went.

- Choose a weapon or tactic of the Spirit that you want to become an expert in using to bless others. Set a goal on how you will practice. Follow through (you may want to ask someone to check on you or write it somewhere where you’ll remember to check on yourself). Record what you learned.

-Pray and ask for guidance in how you can become a better soldier for the Lord. Write down and act on your prompting. Record how it went.

-Consider everything you have learned about courage this month and bring something from the “Imaginative Arts” lens to share with us something that inspires you about courage: poetry, art, music, etc.

Eureka! week focus: Courage to seek for truth in uncertainty

KNOW: Gain knowledge by studying the following:
1) Before you begin your studies, plan this week's studies and discuss it with your parents. Use something like a SAR (Student Accountability Report) and weekly parent mentor meeting (PMM)

2) Read the following:
-Read CH 8-11 of  “The Last Battle” by C.S. Lewis
-Read D&C 123:17:  Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us acheerfully bdo all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the csalvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.
And consider the following quote along with it:
Thomas S. Monson: “Life’s journey is not traveled on a freeway devoid of obstacles, pitfalls, and snares. Rather, it is a pathway marked by forks and turnings. Decisions are constantly before us. To make them wisely, courage is needed: the courage to say, “No,” the courage to say, “Yes.” Decisions do determine destiny.
-Read Moroni 10:3-5, Alma 32:26-42  and D&C 9:7-9

3) watch the following short videos:
and...

UNDERSTANDING: Create understanding by doing 2 or more of the following or make your own inspirement:
-Come with a collection of at least 5 questions that you don’t know the answer to.  Send them ahead of time to Sister Biesinger, please, so she can use them (she will not include your name with them if you feel uncomfortable with that.)

-Bring your favorite puzzle to share with others.  Please contact Sister Biesinger if you are doing this one!

-Research the Scientific method and create something to teach it, like the song at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7P9TKkAnhA

-Read the following scriptures about finding truth in Moroni 10:3-5, Alma 32:26-42 and D&C 9:7-9  and come up with a poster or visual or method of teaching us how to find truth.

-Compare and contrast the scientific method with the scriptures about finding truth.  Write a paper or share/teach your findings with people

-Think about times that you have faced uncertainty.  How have you moved forward? How did or how would having courage in those situations help?  Write down your reflections in your journal about this (or these) experiences or share it with someone.

-Consider the situation of the characters in the chapters we read in the Last Battle: how are they facing uncertainty and what can they do about it?  What would you do in that situation? How does courage play a part in the situations? Share your feelings with a parent or us, or write them down in a paper.

INTELLIGENCE:  Create intelligence by doing one or more of the following:
-Think of a situation that is not “fixed” or “solved” in your life.  Counsel with a parent or friend, or ponder on what you can do while in that situation to find peace.  Make a commitment to yourself to take action and have courage to do what you need to do.

-Take a question you have (whether scientific or personal) and try to take some steps to answer it based on one of the methods above.  Feel free to bring a science project to share if you did that one!

Geo-conquest week focus: Courage to Be Unique!

1)Before you begin your studies, plan this week's studies and discuss it with your parents. Use something like a SAR (Student Accountability Report) and weekly parent mentor meeting (PMM)

2) Read:

- CH 4-7 of  “The Last Battle” by C.S. Lewis

-Moroni 7:45-48
-https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2004/04/the-call-for-courage?lang=eng (read or watch the video)

and...

UNDERSTANDING: To create Understanding choose one of the following to do or come up with one of your own:
-Think about the four chapters we read in “The Last Battle”: many different kinds of people and animals are introduced: write down all the different kinds and how they helped or hurt the situation because of or in spite of their differences.

-The article “Call for Courage” and the video on “courage” had some great examples of courage.  Find other examples of people who were courageous around the world and throughout history and bring them to share.  You can use “I am a Mormon” videos as a great resource or “Story of the World” by Susan Wise Bauer. Come prepared to teach us about them someway, by graphic summary, art, skit, report, etc.

One way that I think would be so cool (for those who like doing things like this) is to come dressed up as that person, give a short speech or read a short report as if you were them, and see if we can guess who they are!

INTELLIGENCE: Create intelligence by doing the following: Help encourage us to be courageous in appreciating diversity in God’s children by PARTICIPATE IN OUR CULTURAL FAIR!
- Find out something more about something cultural in the world that you LOVE: food, game, music, visual display (like on posterboard), artifact, person (please tell me if you are bringing someone to speak about their experiences in another country so we can plan for it!), prezi, etc.  Please email Tova or Abby what you are bringing for our cultural fair, so they can organize it :).
